Curious Word: argot
Encountered in class yesterday, I had a sense of the meaning of the word, but thought it worthwhile to pursue it's precise meaning:A specialized idiomatic vocabulary peculiar to a particular class or group of people, esp. that of an underworld group, devised for private communication and identification: a Restoration play rich in thieves' argot.
It can be pronounced as one might say escargot (with the emphasis on the ar) or alternatively as argut (as a schizophrenic fat woman might refer to her belly).
Frankly, the term makes me wary of some of the jargon my professor tends to use in class, he having long walked the halls of the federal government. Should I intervene in class and call for an argot embargo?
